TOURIGA FRANCA
Perfumed, Touriga Franca is one of the major grape varieties used to produce Porto wine. In 2000 the Touriga Francesa was renamed the Touriga Franca, because this variety has no connection whatsoever with France.
It's the most widely planted grape in the Douro, currently accounting for around a fifth of total vineyard area, and it is now much planted right across the northern half of Portugal.
Touriga Franca is prized for its ability to ripen early as well as the haunting mix of fruit and wildflowers that it contributes to porto wines. Increasingly Touriga Franca can be found either as a single varietal or as part of the blends of still, dry wines.
The Touriga Franca makes richly-coloured, dense yet elegant wines with copious blackberry fruit and floral notes (roses, rock roses, wild flowers...) and firm but velvety tannins that contribute to the ageing potential of blends - it is often blended with Tinta Roriz and Touriga Nacional. Apart from the quality of its wines, it is popular in the vineyard for its resistance to pests and diseases and its reliably good crops of healthy grapes. Take a look at our suggestions:
A blend of Touriga Franca and Touriga Nacional, Andreza, very elegant and structured taste. On the nose, Touriga Nacional gives us the floral component with aromas of bergamot and basil, while Touriga Franca is expressed in flavours like blueberry and backberry. Long finish with lingering notes of ripe fruit. Pairs well with Mediterranean cuisine, pasta, and mild soft cheese. Tyto alba, this red wine is produced with Touriga Franca, Touriga Nacional and Alicante Bouschet. Harmonious aromatic combination of woodland and eucalyptus, cassis, plum, violet and spices. Smooth and well-integrated with long finish. Ideal as an accompaniment to white and red meat dishes.
Porto wines:
A blend of Touriga Nacional, Touriga Franca, Tinta Roriz and Tinta Barroca, Azul Portugal Ruby is an intense Porto wine with ripe red fruit aromas. Rich and full-bodied on the palate. It pairs well with soft cheeses, chocolate desserts and fruit pies.
A blend of Touriga Nacional, Touriga Franca, Tinta Roriz and Tinta Barroca, Azul Portugal Tawny 10 Years Old is a concentrated and elegant Porto with aromas displaying notes of raisins, toffee, coffee and almonds. Very balanced on the palate, with a long finish. Pairs well with cheese and chocolate-based or fruit-based desserts.

G LASS OF WINE BEFORE SMOKING CIGARETTE 'CAN PREVENT DAMAGE'
A re cent study, which was completed by researchers from the University of Saarland in Germany, suggests moderate consumption of red wine is associated with fewer cardiovascular events. The wine contains chemicals that protect against short-term damage to the lining of blood vessels.
Scientists investigated the effects of smoking on the blood and arteries of 20 non smoking volunteers. The study explain that benefits of red wine were attributed to phenol (a natural compound), which mediate its antioxidant effects and stimulates the formation of nitric oxide, rejuvenating coronary arteries.
Lead scientist Dr. Viktoria Schwarz and her team emphasized that this should not be taken as lifestyle advice; they do not intend to motivate occasional smokers to drink or occasional drinkers to smoke. And no one is encouraged to start smoking. But social smokers, or people who engage in “occasional lifestyle smoking” as the study calls them, can feel a little more confident.
Since the study was limited to young, healthy nonsmokers, it is not clear whether these findings apply to the elderly, the ill, or chronic smokers.
The research is reported in the American Journal Of Medicine, check out the article here!
