2018 WINE PRODUCTION IN PORTUGAL
The forecast released in August by the National Statistics Institute (INE), predicts a fall of 5% compared to the 2017 crop.
According to IVV - Portuguese Institute of Vines and Wines, this year wine production is expected to be the lowest in the last six years.
This is a question of quantity rather than quality. According to the IVV, the producers are confident about the qualities of the grapes.
This drop is a result of to climate conditions, namely the cold and rainy spring, the heat wave that was felt in August and the recent fall of hail in some regions in the interior of the country.
However, production was not affected equally. The regions of Lisbon, Setúbal and Alentejo ended up being the most affected by the heat. According to the Observer, some wineries in the Setúbal region may experience a 50% drop in wine production.
The vice-president of the IVV told ECO that in the Alentejo region "there are producers who have lost almost everything" and that, for example, in the north, production was affected not by heat but by diseases such as mildew.
Let's wait and see!

WINE ENTHUSIAST OCTOBER 2018
90 Points - Azul Portugal DOC Dão 2015 “The wood aging of a portion of this wine has given it a dimension of richness, toast and mint, as well as fine fruits. It is structured and still young. Bold and full, with a strong mineral texture, the wine needs another few months. Drink from 2019.” BEST BUY
90 Points - Secretum DOC Douro 2016 “Pure Arinto grown in the strongly mineral soil of the Douro has produced a richly structured, as well as richly fruity, wine. It has plenty of white and citrus fruit as well as a touch of spice from the wood aging. Drink the wine now.”
89 Points - Maria Papoila Escolha Vinho Verde DOC 2017 “This is a bone-dry and rich wine, with a warm, rounded texture that is cut by the intense acidity of the cool climate Vinho Verde region. It is perfumed, flavored with lime, green apples and juicy apricots. Drink this wine now.” BEST BUY
88 Points - Azul Portugal DOC Do Tejo 2016 “This is a soft wine, ripe and with plenty of fruitiness. It comes from a blend of southern Portuguese varieties that give a sense of warmth and richness to the wine. The light structure and acidity hold this fruity wine together. Drink now. ” BEST BUY
88 Points - Andreza Códega do Larinho DOC Douro 2017 “This fruity crisp wine comes from one of the lesser known Douro white grapes. It has attractive apple flavors with a delicious tangy texture. Acidity and a crisp aftertaste finish the wine in a refreshing way.”
88 Points - Andreza Reserva Red DOC Douro 2015 “High-altitude vines give this wine its elegant texture as well the balanced red fruits. It is a structured wine that is still a little young with some firm tannins as well as the forward fruitiness. Drink from 2019.”
87 Points - Lua Cheia em Vinhas Velhas White DOC Douro 2017 “This fruity wine has been made from a field blend of old vines. It is also ripe, full of young fruit, acidity and a crisp apple character. Drink this attractive wine now.”
87 Points - Pegos Claros Blanc de Noirs DOC Palmela 2017 “The interesting conceit of making a white wine from the red Castelão pays off in this fruity crisp wine. It has a light texture although its main thrust is all about the bright fruit and acidity. Drink the wine now.”
Cheers!
