SPOTLIGHT

2019 WINE PRODUCTION IN PORTUGAL

IVV - Portuguese Institute of Vine and Wines - estimates point to an overall volume of 6.7 million hectoliters in 2019/2020 campaign, which means a 10% increase from 2018/2019.

The wine production forecast published in July 31st by the Institute, stated that production increase in most regions, except for Tejo and Lisboa. The regions of Douro & Porto, Terras da Beira and Terras do Dão represent the higher production increase, equal or superior to 30% from the previous campaign.
Overall, grapes are healthy and there is no record presence of major diseases.

See below IVV's forecast:

MINHO
Production is expected to increase 10% in this region. The dry winter contributed to the destruction of many areas due to downy mildew, nor did the cold spring favour this. The sudden differences in temperature caused some problems to occur (especially in the Loureiro variety). Greater production is expected for the Arinto, Alvarinho and Fernão Pires grape varieties.

DOURO & PORTO
An increase of production is expected in the Douro and Porto region (30%). The downy mildew manifested itself with little intensity and did not generally affect the production. The climatic conditions, especially in June with high relative humidity and overcast days, contributed to the spread of the powdery mildew, but without significant impact on the production. The slight advance in the vegetative development will imply a harvest on normal dates, with a good quality expected.

TERRAS DO DÃO
In the region of Terras do Dão production is expected to increasen by 35%. The vines, in general, are in good health with well-developed berries. Some outbreaks of powdery mildew have occurred due to mild temperatures, light showers and dews in June. The plant cycle is within the normal range for the region.

TEJO
The crop is 5% less than the 2018/2019 crop. In general, the vines have a good vegetative development and no signs of pests and/or diseases. The excessive heat on July 11 resulted in some scalding problems.

PENÍNSULA DE SETÚBAL
Production is expected to increase by 10% in the region of Península de Setúbal. Favorable weather conditions boosted grapes of good quality and quantity. Mildew and powdery mildew turned out to be unimportant. A significant increase in production of the Moscatel de Setúbal grape variety is expected compared to last year. An excellent quality crop is expected.

ALENTEJO
In the Alentejo region, wine production is expected to increase by 10%. Vegetative development proceeds normally, with some water stress due to the low rainfall. There is no record of pests or diseases with significant impact, predicting healthy grapes.

Let's wait and see!
