WINE ENTHUSIAST AUGUST 2017
2017-07-25

93 Points - 1836 Grande Reserva White DOC Do Tejo 2015
This fine low-production wood-aged wine is almost Burgundian in its creamy richness. The toast is nicely judged giving a wine that has just enough acidity and has plenty of textured apple and grapefruit flavors. The wine is named after the year of the creation of the Companhia das Lezirias.”

93 Points - Tyto alba Touriga Nacional Regional Tejo 2014
This 100% Touriga Nacional comes from the government-owned estate in the north of Tejo. Named after the barn owl that is found in the woods, the wine is structured with dense tannins as well as concentrated black fruits. It is balanced with its fruit and structure already working well together, but it will need time. Drink from 2019.” CELLAR SELECTION

91 Points - Monte da Baía Reserva Regional Península de Setúbal 2014
"
This oak-aged wine is intense, rich and packed with black fruits. It has spice from the wood as well as from the Syrah in the blend, while the juicy ripe character comes from Alicante Bouschet. It's an impressive concentrated wine that will be best from 2018."
EDITORS' CHOICE

90 Points - 1836 Grande Reserva Red DOC Do Tejo 2014
Properly almost black in color (as befits a wine from the red-juiced Alicante Bouschet), this wine reveals an impressive depth of flavor. It is dark and concentrated, powered by still-young tannins. There is an unfortunate edge of extraction that takes away from the ripe black-plum fruit and the acidity. It will be ready from 2019.”

90 Points - Pegos Claros Reserva DOC Palmela 2014
"
The wine reveals a serious side to Castelão that is not often shown. Its wood aging and structured character give the wine longevity as well as solid fruits and concentrated tannins. Lightness comes in the form of the acidity and the juicy black fruits. Drink from 2019."

87 Points - Dona Helena Rose Reg. Península de Setúbal 2016
"
This is a light, bright blend of Castelão and Syrah. It has refreshing acidity and lively red fruits that give the wine a really crisp and fruity character. Drink now."
BEST BUY

87 Points - Maria Bonita Vinho Verde DOC 2016
"
In praise in the Loureiro grape, this dry wine has lively acidity while also having a ripe full texture of apples and pink grapefruit. The wine is crisp and intensely fruity. Drink now and until early 2018."
BEST BUY

86 Points - Pegos Claros Blanc de Noirs DOC Palmela 2016
"This is an unusual view of the red Castelão grape, here vinified as a white wine with no skin color at all. Some wood aging adds spice and roundness to what is a smooth, while toasty, wine. Its white fruit and acidity are joined by some tannins. So this wine needs a few more months. Drink from early 2018.

86 Points - Tyto alba Rose DOC do Tejo 2016
"
A light fragrant blend of Touriga Nacional and Tinta Cão, the wine is soft with plenty of strawberry fruitiness and acidity. The aftertaste has a great lift of perfumed crispness."

86 Points - Tyto alba Sauvignon Blanc DOC do Tejo 2016
"In the spirit that Tejo can grow anything on its fertile soil, this wine is a rounded tropical-fruit-flavored Sauvignon Blanc. It has acidity enough as well as a warm smooth character. It is certainly ready to drink
."

85 Points - Azul Portugal White DOC Palmela 2016
"Part of a range of wines that showcases the different styles of Portugal's regions, This wine is smooth, creamily textured and with a warm ripe character. It has pineapple and mango as well as crisper lemon flavors to give a rich wine that is still poised and finely balanced. Drink now.

85 Points - Herdade de Catapereiro Escolha White Regional Tejo 2015
"
Fernão Pires with Sauvignon Blanc allows the second grape's herbal nature to shine. So it is crisp, citrusy and with intense acidity. The wine has a ripe feel with hints of tropical fruit at the end. Drink now."

85 Points - Monte da Baía White Reg. Península de Setúbal 2016
"
The blend of Fernão Pires and Arinto is a classic for the region. It gives a light and perfumed wine with a creamy texture and plenty of balancing acidity. Bright and fruity, the wine has just a final tang to add crispness. Drink now."
