OPEN NOTE

It’s officially autumn but days are still warm and sunny. Grape harvest is finished and we will see what the juices will reserve for us.

At Companhia das Lezírias we celebrate harvest season with friends and family. Every year, the winery organizes a day of harvesting and invites people to join them and have an unforgettable experience. Read more about it below.

Is moderate drinking linked to cognitive health in old age? Researchers at University of California San Diego School of Medicine say yes. Learn more about it below.

SPOTLIGHT
DAY OF HARVESTING AT COMPANHIA DAS LEZÍRIAS

The grape harvesting season is a fantastic time to experience the ancient winemaking traditions in Portugal.
Companhia das Lezírias, near Lisbon, organizes a “Harvesting Day” where you can take part in every step of the process, from the manual picking to the bare foot treading in old “lagares”.

This unforgettable experience started in the morning of September the 16th and finished with a great tasting and lunch.

The bunches were cut one by one and then placed in 20kg boxes that are carried to the winery.

After a guided tour on the winery, you are invited to get into wine “lagares” to foot tread the grapes alongside the rest of the workers.

See you there next year?

ODERATE DRINKING MAY BENEFIT COGNITIVE HEALTH IN OLD AGE

A new study published in the Journal of Alzheimer's Disease finds evidence that older adults who consume alcohol moderately on a regular basis are more likely to live to the age of 85 without dementia or other cognitive impairments than non-drinkers.

Researchers looked at data from 1,344 adults (728 women; 616 men) from Rancho Bernardo, a white-collar, middle-to-upper-middle-class suburb in San Diego County. More than 99 percent of the study participants, tracked from 1984 to 2013, are Caucasian with at least some college education.

“This study shows that moderate drinking may be part of a healthy lifestyle to maintain cognitive fitness in aging,” said lead author Erin Richard, a graduate student in the Joint San Diego State University/UC San Diego Doctoral Program in Public Health.

The researchers said the study does not suggest drinking is responsible for increased longevity and cognitive health. Alcohol consumption, particularly of wine, is associated with higher incomes and education levels, which in turn are associated with lower rates of smoking, lower rates of mental illness and better access to health care.
